Laughter

Once I laughed
A deep bellied laugh
A laugh of childhood wonder
A simple laugh
A giggle, a chuckle, a hoot.

I laughed in surprise
I laughed in delight
I laughed when bubbles burst
And balls, wind blown, rolled away
I laughed to watch them go

I laughed in races
So always came last
I laughed a lot
I grew and laughed less
And grew some more and laughed little

I wonder where my laughter’s gone
That deep bellied laugh
I wonder if it’s hibernating
Waiting for my senility
Before it comes again

Tis a shame
It’s gone
I could do with a laugh
A deep bellied laugh

A giggle, a chuckle a hoot.
